For every successful affiliate
making money, there are probably several that never quite made it.
There is no sure fire path to success as an affiliate – like most
businesses it takes hard work and effort. This guide provides great
information on some of the best ways to get started – this
particular section focuses on some the pitfalls that can lead to
failure.
Thinking Affiliating is
Easy
One of the most appealing aspects
of becoming an affiliate is the ease at which you can get started.
As revealed in this guide, there are low barriers to entry and
anyone can try their hand at online affiliating.
However, easy to get started is not
the same as easy to succeed. It is not difficult
to make money as an online affiliate, but it does require
commitment and dedication. The amount of time and effort required
to achieve your goals depends, of course, on what your targets are.
If you are looking to make a few dollars a month extra by running a
website that subjects interest you, then a couple of hours
updating the site might well be enough. However, if your aim is to
become a full-time affiliate making a decent living, then a lot
more effort is needed.
Anyone that thinks throwing a few
pages up on a website is all that’s needed to sit back and watch
the money rolling in is very unlikely to find success as an online
affiliate.
Not Being
Prepared
Referring back to Section 3 – Getting Started as an
Affiliate you’ve got to set out your goals and plan
how to achieve them.
Affiliates that are not prepared
and have no plan are less likely to be focussed on doing what is
required to succeed. It is all too easy to get distracted and spend
time doing things that are not going to help generate revenue.
Doing too Much
This is a very common mistake in
the affiliate business. Even experienced affiliates can sometimes
be guilty of this and it’s an easy trap to fall in to.
Once you have started your first
website, it is very likely you will start having ideas for a
second, a third website and maybe even more. This is not a bad
thing in itself – having multiple websites can help you grow your
affiliate business significantly over time.
Remember, though, a good website
requires a lot of time and effort. It is strongly recommended that
you establish your initial website first and ideally start
generating revenue before you move onto other projects.
Not Learning from
Mistakes
Every single affiliate makes
mistakes when they are starting out – even the most successful
ones. The affiliates making the most money today probably made
plenty of mistakes at the beginning. What sets these people apart
from those that fail, though, is they learned from those
mistakes.
A good affiliate will constantly
take the time to review their actions and look at where they have
gone wrong. This could be choosing the wrong domain name, targeting
the wrong audience, picking the wrong keywords or using the wrong
software. The key is not to get too down heartened, but to correct
where you’ve gone wrong and try not to make the same mistakes
again.
Giving up Too
Easily
This can happen in any business,
but it is possibly the single biggest route to failure for online
affiliates. It can be very frustrating to dedicate hours and hours
researching, planning, writing and building a website you are proud
of, only to see no money coming in. Unfortunately, many people make
the assumption at this point that their website will never work –
that it’s all been a waste of time and affiliating is not for
them.
It may well be true that
affiliating is not for them if they are prepared to give up so
easily. It doesn’t however mean that their website is a failure
and they’ve wasted their time. While it is not impossible to
start a website from scratch and start generating revenue
instantly, it is certainly not very common. Websites need some time
to build some trust and authority – both in the eyes of the
readers and, importantly, the search engines.
A bit of patience goes a long way
for an affiliate, so don’t give up too easily and you may well
find you get where to you want to be eventually.
