The affiliate
industry is made up of all kinds of different people, ranging right
from an individual with a personal blog who makes a small
additional income all the way to multi-million dollar companies
running huge networks of sites in hundreds of different niches.
Although it is possible to commence
affiliate marketing on a large scale - with a decent budget and a
sound knowledge base - the vast majority of affiliates start out on
their own, often in addition to holding a full time position and
with a small budget. Very often, they will not even know much about
affiliate marketing and what is required to be successful. There is
absolutely nothing wrong with getting started this way. Indeed,
many of the most successful affiliates in the business today set
out in exactly the same way.
So why choose to become an
affiliate? The most obvious reason for many, you would imagine, is
to make money. Whether the aim is to make a small additional income
or to build a large scale operation, the affiliate business
provides opportunities for everyone. Money is not necessarily the
driving force for everyone though, and there are certainly many
other reasons to try affiliating. Below are a few of the reasons
that make becoming an online affiliate appealing.
No Barriers to
Entry
Quite simply, anyone with access to
a computer and the internet can get started as an affiliate - as
all that is needed to get started is a website. While it is
recommended to register a new domain, or buy an existing one, there
are companies out there that offer free website building on their
own domains. It is possible to simply sign up, choose a layout and
add some content and have a live website immediately. You don’t
need any specialist skills or knowledge to become an affiliate in
this way.
Low Setup
Costs
As discussed above, starting an
affiliate website can be done pretty much for free. Although we
would not advise using a free website – it is much better to own
and develop a domain for a number of reasons – it is a cheap way
to get a feel for building a site. It doesn’t cost much to buy a
domain though, and there are plenty of cheap hosting services out
there too.
There is very little in the way of
other costs – assuming you already own a computer and have
internet access. No premises are required, as you can work from
home. No supplies are needed, and no employees - at least not until
the business grows. There are no production costs as you are
looking to recommend and sell other peoples’ products and
services and not provide your own. Of course, you can choose to
invest in your website and pay for other services such as design,
content writing and content but it is possible to do it all
yourself.
Finally, it is usually free to join
affiliate programs too, so there are no extra costs there.
Range of
Opportunities
There are many, many different ways
to operate as an affiliate. A lot of new affiliates start out with
a simple blog, writing their personal thoughts on a particular
subject, or range of subjects, and advertise products or services
that relate to their chosen topics. Review sites are also common
– writing comparisons and promoting the best for example.
Community sites, forums, and news sites can all be built to work
around an affiliate model.
Massive
Marketplace
The internet reaches out to an
audience all across the globe. Whatever the service or products you
are choosing to promote, you can advertise to hundreds of millions
of people from the comfort of your own home.
Passive Income
This is one of the major
attractions of starting an affiliate business. If you can create a
website that gets regular visitors, and in turn successfully send
those to visitors to merchants or operators that will pay you for
your traffic, you will literally be making money while you sleep.
Your website never closes; your doors are open 24 hours a day, 7
days a week.
Depending on what you are promoting
on your site, once you have a sent this traffic you may receive a
revenue from them for life. Poker is a great example of this. Once
you have sent a player to a poker room on a rev-share deal, every
single time that player sits down and plays poker, you will earn a
commission on their activity.
Scalable
Business
Building websites is easily
scalable. Let’s say you are interested in getting fit, and
you’ve created a website all about that subject – promoting
various health supplements that fitness fanatics might be interest
in using. You are successfully getting visitors to your site who
are interested in keeping fit, so there is a wealth of other
markets you could tap into. You could, for example, create a
section on cycling as a method of keeping fit, and promote various
cycling supplies companies and their products. Taking it a step
further, you could have sections on the fitness benefits of a wide
variety of different sports, and look for relevant merchants in
each sport.
Alternatively, or in addition, once
you have grasped the concepts of affiliate marketing and have a
blueprint for building a revenue generating website you could
simply “rinse and repeat”. Create an entirely new website on a
different subject and follow the same steps to add another source
of revenue for your business.
Unlimited potential
income
Working for a wage, your income is
likely pre-determined and almost certainly limited in how high it
could go. There is no cap for affiliate marketers; the only limits
are how much time and effort are committed.
Choosing to become an online
affiliate is by no means a guarantee of unimaginable wealth and a
comfortable life. The most successful affiliates have got there by
sheer hard work and determination. It might not be easy, but it
is possible for anyone. With
little to no risk, and plentiful opportunities, affiliate marketing
is an excellent way to make money online.
