As
we’ve already discussed, it is easy to get started as an online
affiliate but harder to actually succeed at it. There are many
different aspects to the affiliating business and so many different
market places it is possible to affiliate for. Each aspect requires
a different skill set and most market places require different
approaches. The result is a whole wealth of subjects related to
affiliating that you can learn about. Below is a list of the more
common ones :-
Web Programming
- Using a CMS
- Web Design
- Using Photoshop
- Content Writing
- Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
- Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
- Pay Per Click Advertising (PPC)
- Keyword Research
- Niche Finding
- Content Writing
- Conversion Technique
- Customer Retention Management (CRM)
The truth is, it is unlikely you
will ever master all of the skills related to successful affiliate
marketing. Knowing what you can do best, what to outsource and when
to seek mutually beneficial partnerships is an important part of
affiliating when you start to scale up. That being said, it is very
useful to have at least a basic understanding of all of the main
aspects of affiliate marketing.
If you want to learn how to program
HTML, integrate a CMS or learn how to use Photoshop, then a Google
search will surely find some “teach yourself” tutorials to help
you get a grasp. There have also been many books written on these
subjects. Web design is more difficult to teach – design is a
talent you tend to either have, or not – but you can learn how to
use certain software etc. to get yourself started.
When it comes to SEO or SEM, this
is an art-form really. You could study the subject at length and
still not have clear answers about what does or doesn’t work. The
best approach is usually via testing various techniques and seeing
what does and doesn’t have an impact. It also helps to keep up to
date with developments within the search engines and what they are
doing. There are many quality SEOs who publish blogs sharing their
thoughts and these can make interesting and informative
reading.
PPC can be very, very profitable
when done correctly but it can cost a lot of money to learn how to
do it right. There are organisations and individuals out there who
will run campaigns for you, at a cost. Equally, there is a lot of
advice and information out there if you take the time to find
i
Like design, writing tends to be a
skill you either have or you don’t – however it is possible to
improve your skills through practice. Searching through the net you
will find various guides on how to improve your writing skills
too.
Of the best things about affiliate
marketing is, despite it’s competitive nature, there is a lot of
shared information between affiliates. Although it is unlikely that
anyone will share a hugely profitable niche if they find one, or
talk in detail about their more effective techniques – many
successful affiliates do talk in broad terms about what is required
to achieve in the industry.
There is a lot of information out
there that will help you learn more and improve as an affiliate –
you just have to take the time to weed out the quality advice from
the not so good. There are several good affiliate forums too – it
can be very useful to read through some of the discussions on these
to enhance your knowledge. And don’t be shy either. Join at least
one, and preferably more, of these forums while you are still
learning – particularly if you can find one focused on your
chosen niche(s). Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you need
some help on something. Others forum members will invariably try
and help where they can. Just make sure you try to add some value
too and join in discussions where you feel you can contribute.
It’s very easy to fall into the
trap of spending all your time reading and researching and reducing
your output. Make sure you are still productive and getting things
done. But knowledge is power, and we would recommend joining a
couple of forums and subscribing to a couple of relevant blogs to
help expand your knowledge base. |
