So,
you’ve made the decision to try your hand at affiliate marketing;
what In this section, we’re going to tell you how to get
underway with our step-by-step guide to starting out as an
affiliate.
Set your Goals
A fair amount of successful
affiliates got started almost by accident. It might have been
through writing a personal blog, or choosing to build a website
about a particular passion or any number of reasons. For the best
chance of success though, it helps to have an idea of what you are
looking to achieve. You might love your job and just want to create
a small additional income in your spare time or you may have
aspirations to become the next big name in affiliate marketing. It
doesn’t matter – as both are achievable – but setting out
clear goals about what YOU want will help you get
there.
Plan
Once you know what your objective
is, the next step is to plan how to get there. This is just as
important for experienced affiliates launching a new project as it
is for a beginner just getting started.
You need to decide what you are
going to do and how you are going to do it. If you have a clear
idea on this, the next steps are much, much easier. Questions you
need to answer are:
- What is your website going to be about?
- Who will be interested in your site?
- How can you appeal to your target market?
- What products or services will your market be interested
in?
It also helps to decide at this
stage how much time and money you are going to invest in your new
venture – and stick to it. Always remember affiliate marketing is
a business – and needs to be treated as
such.
Your New
Domain
We mentioned in the previous
section that it is possible to launch your website on a free
service, but it is strongly recommended to register your own
domain. Your chances of success are much higher and you will have
far greater control. Registering a domain is very cheap and is
money well spent.
Choose the domain name carefully.
Think about your credibility, and think about the people you are
targeting – your domain should be relevant to both them and the
content you are planning to include on your site.
www.bobsbrilliantwebsite.com might seem like a cool name to Bob,
but it doesn’t tell the potential visitor much about what it is
about. If Bob is wanting to write about where to buy cheap golf
equipment then www.bobsgolfequipment.com is a significant
improvement, even if not quite perfect.
There is nothing wrong with adding
a personal touch to your domain name, but make it relevant. The
domain should reflect as closely as possible whatever the website
is about, be memorable and preferably be “brandable” in some
way. Although this does depend on what your goals are, it doesn’t
hurt to be prepared for the future should you have some success and
look to scale up.
Once you have chosen your new
domain, you need to arrange a hosting package. There are many
companies offering this service, so it is not hard to find one. It
is probably best to start with a basic package while you get
started, as this can always be upgraded later.
Research
Now you know what your website is
going to be about, do some research online and see what others are
doing in your field. You should never look to create a copy of
another website, or reproduce any of their content, but it
doesn’t hurt to take a look and get a feel for what else is out
there.
It is a good idea at this stage to
also explore some of the affiliate programs that would be a good
fit on your website. We would usually recommend you get your
website built before approaching these programs and getting signed
up, but it’s worth doing some preparation about which ones you
might be using.
Build Your
Website
You are now ready to start work on
your first website. There is a very wide range of options to be
considered here, depending on what sort of site you are building,
what level of budget you have and how much technical knowledge.
One of the most common, and
probably best, ways for a new affiliate to get started is using a
free content management system (CMS) such as Wordpress, Joomla or
Drupal. Wordpress is almost certainly the easiest of these to use
so beginners would do well to go down this route.
The Wordpress software is free to
download and many web hosting companies offer “one-click
installation” to make the process easier. Even if your web
hosting company doesn’t offer this, there are plenty of guides on
the web about how to do get Wordpress installed on your site.
Once installed, you have control
over the layout of your site to make it look how you want. There
are thousands of free “themes” available, which provide you
with a complete layout and colour scheme. Alternatively, you can
have your own designed relatively cheaply.
Wordpress was originally a blogging
platform but it is has evolved substantially and it is possible to
build a large site of any kind using this CMS. There is a huge
number of plug-ins available to add various functionalities to a
site and it is definitely an excellent option for a new
affiliate.
There are other ways to build a
site from scratch. If you have a decent budget, you can pay for a
web designer to design a site exactly how you want it to look, and
then a web developer to code it for you. If you have some technical
knowledge then you could try your hand at developing your own site
using HTML. It is important to research the different options and
choose the right one for you. If you are just starting out though,
it is strongly recommended to keep it as simple as possible,
leaving you as much time as possible to grow your site and start
attracting traffic.
Adding Content
Your website is built and ready to
go; now you need to populate it with good quality, original
content. Interesting and informative content is key to the success
of any affiliate website. Make sure you are providing information
that is relevant to your target audience and that will keep them
coming back to your site to read more. Whatever products or
services you have chosen to promote on your website, try to
recommend them rather than do a hard sell. An important goal for
your site is to make it a useful resource for your readers – if
you focus on that then the sales will come over time.
Please remember, all of the above
is an outline of the steps required to get started as an affiliate.
There is no “magic bullet” to affiliate marketing, and this is
not a guaranteed recipe for success. By following the above steps
and doing your own research then you are well on your way - but the
real success will be had by creating a website that is appealing to
a marketplace, and providing them with a resource containing
valuable information and advice.
