The
purpose of this guide is to provide new affiliates with useful
advice on how to get started in the affiliating industry from the
very beginning. This section summarises some of the sections
discussed in detail and addresses the key components to finding
success as an online affiliate. We’ve provided additional tips to
help build your business, some of which will be expanden on in
later sections.
Please remember, though, this is
not a ready-made blueprint for success. We’ve said it before and
we’ll say it again – online affiliating takes time and effort.
Following our advice will help you grasp the basics of becoming an
affiliate and set you on the right path. Only real commitment,
dedication and hard work will lead to ultimate success.
Good
Preparation
It is so important to know what you
are trying to achieve and how you are going to achieve it. It
doesn’t matter how ambitious, or otherwise, you are – whatever
your goals you need a plan to get there. Do your research, set your
goals and make a plan – and make sure you stick to it
Organise
Yourself
Allocate a fixed amount of time
every day, week or month, to work on your website and make sure you
spend that time doing it. Keep a regularly updated “to do list”
and try to prioritise your tasks. Try and set aside a separate
working space for when you are spending time on your website.
Treat Affiliating like a
Business
You may not have a shop or office,
or employees, and you don’t have physical stock to sell, but
online affiliating is still a business and should be treated as
such. Even if you are just aiming to create a small additional
income in your spare time, it pays to be professional. You never
know where you might end up, and starting out in the right way will
be a great benefit if you ever choose to become a full time
affiliate.
Be Realistic
Nothing is more discouraging than
failing to meet your expectations. Don’t expect to start from
scratch and be a millionaire in two months. Be realistic in your
goals and give yourself time to achieve them. Pretty much anything
is possible – but as a rule the more ambitious you are, the
longer it will take to hit your targets.
Perseverance is
Key
Your first website might not quite
work out how you planned, and neither might your second or your
third. You will almost certainly make mistakes. Don’t be
disheartened, learn from your mistakes and keep up your efforts.
With the right attitude, you will get there eventually.
Be Creative & Be
Unique
There is nothing wrong with looking
at what other people have done, and trying to do it better. But
don’t just try and replicate what other affiliates are doing. Get
creative and come up with your own ideas – there is a wealth of
untapped opportunities out there. Fresh, unique concepts will
always have a better chance of success than copying what has
already been put out there.
Focus your
Energies
If you have a million and one
ideas, that’s fantastic. But don’t try and do them all at once.
A focussed approach to one project is far more likely to be time
well spent than trying to launch a dozen new websites a week. Once
you have learned and understood affiliating and created one
profitable website, by all means get out there and build some more
– but try and get that one success behind you first.
Understand Your
Audience
Know your target audience and focus
your website accordingly. Provide a reason for your visitors to
come in the first place and a reason for them to come back. Give
them the information they are looking for and you will earn their
trust. Earn their trust and they will be far more likely to follow
your recommendations.
Content is
King
To be a successful affiliate you
need quality content. For the best chance of achieving your goals,
your content needs to meet one main criterion – be useful,
relevant and informative for your visitors. You want your content
to help your rankings in the search and you want it to convert –
but always, always write with the reader in mind. If you get that
right, the rest will usually follow. The more quality, relevant
content you have on your site, the better you will do.
Work Smarter, Not
Harder
This old adage is relevant now
matter business you are in, but has particular relevance to online
affiliates. There can be many different skills required in the
creation, development and managing of an online affiliate website.
To achieve maximum success it is important to make the most of your
time and budget. Outsourcing, or partnerships, can allow you to
concentrate on what you do best. If you can write top quality
content but have no design skills, then buy a template for your new
site or go out and hire a designer. If you can design, build and
optimise websites but aren’t a great writer – then pay someone
qualified to write fresh content for you or to edit your own
content to improve it.
Rakeback Engine is an excellent
example of how to work smarter, not harder. We provide a
fully-managed solution to our rakeback partners, freeing them to do
what they do best.
Use the
Internet
If you are trying to make a living
online, then you should know how to get the most out of the
internet. There is a wealth of information online that should be
tapped into and a host of people you can make contact with. If you
are doing in-depth research on a subject you want to write about,
the internet will help. If you need information on how to improve
your website rankings, the internet will help. If you want to hire
an expert to write about a specific topic for your website, the
internet will help. If you can’t work out to install the latest
Wordpress plug-in to your site, the internet will help.
Market Your
Website
If content is king, then marketing
is his queen. There is no point in having the best website in the
world on any given subject if no-one knows about it. Put some
effort into increasing the visibility of your site and you will be
rewarded. We’re not suggesting that you starting spamming all
over the place, but don’t be afraid to get word of your site out
there. Make sure the search engines know you exist and start
ranking you.
Conversions =
Profit
In much the same way as a quality
website with no visitors is redundant; you won’t make money if
you have steady traffic but no conversions. You don’t need to ram
your offers down your readers’ throats, but you do need to give
them a reason to follow your recommendations and you need to make
sure you tell them how to follow them.
This is not an exhaustive list by
any means. There is much to learn about online affiliating, but
much of it can only be learned by practical experience. It helps to
know the basics and our advice will put you on the right path. But
there is no substitute for experience and the first step to success
is getting started.
